Welcome to the Environmental Health Informatics online certificate program offered by the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences of the UIC School of Public Health.

Improve Public Health By Considering The Impact Of Environmental Factors
Environmental health informatics is an interdisciplinary field which deals with the storage, retrieval, organization, analysis and optimal use of environmental health information, data and scientific knowledge for problem solving and decision making. UIC’s Environmental Health Informatics (EHI) online certificate prepares public health professionals to organize and analyze the environmental health information to formulate comprehensive risk management frameworks.

The Environmental Health Informatics certificate program is an accredited educational program of the highly ranked UIC School of Public Health. EHI courses are taught by UIC School of Public Health faculty members, staff from the Environmental Protection Agency and other public and environmental health professionals.

What Will I Learn?
EHI participants will acquire the following knowledge and skills:

  • An understanding of environmental health monitoring databases and datamining techniques and the ability to design and analyze these systems
  • An understanding of the potentials, limitations and various components of a geographic information system (GIS) and risk assessment software packages
  • Ability to formulate, apply and determine the implications of hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment methodologies
  • Ability to consult and communicate effectively with stakeholders concerned with environmental health including the public, interest groups and regulatory bodies by means of powerful informatics visualization tools

What Is Required?
The EHI certificate consists of four courses:

  • Environmental Health Database Design and Analysis       
  • Geographic Information System Application in Public Health         
  • Datamining Applications in Public Health            
  • Environmental Risk Assessment and Management

These online courses promote student and faculty interaction through online discussion groups and the use of virtual collaboration sessions. Course objectives are assessed by participation in discussion, quizzes and assignments. Students may transfer credits earned in the certificate program towards the fulfillment of the UIC Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program.

Who Should Apply?
The Environmental Health Informatics certificate program is ideal for public and environmental health professionals including environmental health researchers, health inspectors, industrial hygienists, data specialists, public health officers, survey statisticians, environmental consultants, employees of state and federal agencies and more. Graduate students with some coursework in natural or physical sciences, mathematics or engineering, who wish to enrich their educational profile in the multidisciplinary field of environmental health informatics will benefit from this program. Anyone interested in the areas of urban planning, agricultural management or resource development should apply.
