CERTIFICATE OBJECTIVES

The Environmental Health Informatics certificate program (EHI) consists of four online courses. The certificate program curriculum allows students to develop the following competencies:

  • To understand the structure and basic characteristics of spatial and temporal environmental health monitoring databases

  • To design and analyze spatial and temporal environmental health databases

  • To select and apply appropriate datamining techniques for the preparation of environmental health monitoring databases, identification of patterns and the formulation of predictive models and their validation

  • To understand the potentials, limitations and various components of a geographic information system (GIS)

  • To gain an operational understanding of the limitations and appreciation of their potentials of the most widely used database analysis, datamining, GIS and risk assessment software packages

  • To be able to apply commonly used hazard, vulnerability and risk assessment methodologies

  • To formulate remedial hazard and (emergency) risk management plans based on decision tree methodologies

By offering this program online, UIC’s School of Public Health aims to provide an accessible alternative to a full degree program in environmental health informatics. At a total of 14 credit hours, even part-time students can quickly complete the EHI certificate. Additionally, working students benefit from the scheduling flexibility the online format provides.
