OVERVIEW
The Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) division prepares students to protect the environment and improve the health of workers and the general public. EOHS students learn to anticipate, identify and assess environmental and workplace health hazards, recommend corrective measures, institute programs to reduce morbidity and mortality, and evaluate these efforts.
Specialized study in EOHS is offered in air pollution, industrial hygiene, water quality, occupational medicine, environmental chemistry, hazardous materials management, toxicology, occupational and environmental epidemiology and occupational safety.
EOHS Faculty
EOHS faculty is made up of public health professionals who focus in a variety of disciplines. They work to reduce environmental stressors, protect children’s health, keep construction and farm workers safe from occupational injury, monitor water quality and design safe drinking water systems, develop workplace ventilations systems and assess the risk in the transfer of pollutants to humans at all phases of development.
Students
EOHS students come from a variety of backgrounds, including earth and environmental sciences, chemistry, biology, and health related fields, some directly from undergraduate programs and others from practice settings.
EOHS graduates regularly find positions in environmental and occupational fields in government, such as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Cook County Department of Environmental Control; and in industry, academia and consulting, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Abbott Laboratories, Ford Motor Co., Motorola, LTV Steel and the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
