Degree Options

The Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) awards the following professional and graduate degrees through the School of Public Health and the Graduate College:

  • Master of Public Health (MPH)
  • Master of Science (MS)
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The MPH is professional degree program involving course work in EOHS as well as core courses in other public health disciplines and practical public health experience through the practicum. The MS and PhD are research degrees requiring a thesis for students interested in research or academic careers.

Enrollment can be on a full- or part-time basis. Part-time students should expect to take some day classes to complete their degrees. MPH students are admitted to the Comprehensive Program or to the Professional Enhancement Program for experienced professionals with at least three years of paid public health or community health experience. MPH students in the Comprehensive Program will select a three course quantitative theme as part of their program.

Note: The DrPH is a school-wide, not a divisional, degree. For information about the DrPH program visit: http://www.uic.edu/sph/degrees_drph.htm.

Curriculum

EOHS offers three concentrations in which students can focus their studies:

EOHS Track:

The EOHS curriculum emphasizes quantitative skills and as much practical experience as possible within the limits of an academic program. EOHS field investigations, both as academic courses and research projects, take advantage of the access to industries and challenges associated with a major urban metropolis. Industries include heavy manufacturing, health care, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and high technology. Air and water pollution and solid and hazardous waste management are among the challenges addressed.

Specialized study is offered in air pollution, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, water quality, and hazardous materials management. In the industrial hygiene concentration, the MS and the comprehensive MPH curricula are accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ASAC-ABET). The occupational medicine concentration has been approved for physicians seeking eligibility to the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Physicians in this program are awarded the MPH degree upon completion of their studies.

Special Programs of Study

Joint Degrees

The Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences participates actively in the School of Public Health’s joint degree programs with the College of Medicine (MPH/MD), the College of Business Administration (MPH/MBA), and the College of Dentistry (MPH/DDS). These combined degree programs allow students to complete the MPH portion with requirements comparable to the MPH Professional Enhancement Program (PEP).

ABET - Accredited Industrial Hygiene Program

The Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS), University of Illinois at Chicago, has a nationally recognized and ABET-accredited program in industrial hygiene. The program provides pertinent scientific and public health training to prepare students to protect the environment and improve the health of workers and the general public.
