The Illinois Occupational
and Environmental Health and Safety Education and Research
Center (Illinois ERC) was established in 1977 as one of the
first National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health
(NIOSH) Educational Resource Centers in the United States.
The NIOSH ERCs were established to provide graduate and professional
education in occupational safety and health and continuing
education. The Illinois ERC has long-standing graduate training
programs in industrial hygiene and occupational health nursing
and two occupational medicine residency programs: one at
the University of Illinois and the other at Cook County Hospital.
In 199x the Illinois ERC added a new graduate training program
in Agricultural Safety and Health. The Illinois ERC is multi-institutional
and multi-disciplinary. Based at the University of Illinois
at Chicago School of Public Health, the Illinois ERC partners
with the UIC College of Nursing, UIUC Institute of Labor
and Industrial Relations, UIUC College of Agriculture, and
Cook County Hospital to provide its professional and continuing
education programs.
In 1999 the NIOSH ERCs expanded their mandate from "Educational
Resource Centers" to "Education and Research Centers".
The ERCs were funded to provide a pilot research grants program
to support establishment of academic/labor/industry research
partnerships to conduct intervention research in their regions.
The Illinois ERC serves Illinois, and portions of the contiguous
states of Indiana and Wisconsin.
