LICENSING AND REGULATION

Quality Assurance

Radon Licensees adopted rule changes of 2005

In 2005 the Illinois Emergency Management Agency has modified and adopted certain rules in view of the current practices followed by the radon measurement licensees. The following are some of the main changes noted with regard to quality assurance:

  • A quality assurance program description acceptable to the agency includes, but is not limited to –A description of management and structure of the organization.
  • For the renewal of licensees the following are some of the important requirements:
  • A description of relevant computer hardware and software;
  • A planning process for radon and radon progeny radon services;
  • A corrective action program
  • Professional licensees shall submit standard operating procedures for the performance of school and commercial measurements unless the business will be limited to homes.

For further information do take a look at Section 422.60.

Licensees need to maintain a quality assurance program(QAP), including written procedures for attaining quality, objectives and a system for recording and monitoring the results of the quality assurance measurements for each device used by the professional licensee. It also includes the maintenance of control charts and related statistical data.

The objective of quality assurance is to ensure that data are scientifically sound and of known precision and accuracy. There are 6 general categories of quality control measurements-

  • Calibration Measurements
  • Known Exposure Measurements(spikes)
  • Background Measurements
  • Duplicate Measurements
  • Routine Instrument Performance Checks
  • Cross-checks.
