LICENSING AND REGULATION

Radon Licensees adopted rule changes of 2005

In 2005 the Illinois Emergency Management Agency has modified and adopted certain rules in view of the current practices followed by the radon measurement licensees. The following are some of the main changes noted with regard to testing strategy:

Based on the decision if the buildings are involved in real estate transaction, the recommended testing strategy changes for the home environment measurements.

The radon level of less than or equal to 4pC/L is considered safe. Keeping this in view- in a building not involved in a real estate transaction.-

The first step in a building measurement is to perform short-term measurement in the lowest structural areas. If the result is

  1. < 4pC/L retest need to be done only after 2 years.
  2. Between 4-10pC/L -perform another short test or a long term test, after the second test if the average of 2 tests is
    • >4pC/L fix the home.
    • If it is <4pC/L then retest after 2 years.
  3. If>10pC/L perform an additional short term test if the average of the 2 tests is <4pC/L perform a long term test. If the average of the two tests is >4pC/L fix the home.

In a building involved in real estate transaction the first step is to perform a short-term measurement in the lowest structural areas.

The three methods for short term testing are-

  1. Sequential tests
  2. Simultaneous tests
  3. Single test using electronic monitors.

If the result is less than 4pC/L, retest in 2 years time.

If the result is > 4pC/L fix the home.
