A coalition of professional, educational and community organizations
in Chicago is hosting Chornobyl: The Next Generation conference
to mark the 20th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear plant
disaster. The one-day conference will examine the ongoing health
and social effects of the disaster on Ukraine, Belarus and Russia
as well as lessons learned which can help future generations prevent
and respond to nuclear reactor accidents in the future. The
conference features distinguished experts from the United States,
Ukraine, Belarus, and Canada.
The conference was organized through the joint efforts of the Ukrainian
Business and Professional Group of Chicago, the Ukrainian Medical
Association of North America-Illinois Chapter, the Ukrainian Engineers’ Society, Chicago Chapter,
and the Great Lakes Centers for Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health
at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health.
The conference will be held on Saturday, April 29, 9:00 am 5:00
pm, in the auditorium at the University of Illinois School of Public
Health at 1603 W. Taylor Street in Chicago. The cost of attendance is $35 for the general public and $15
for students. A box lunch can be ordered for an additional $10. Pre-registration

The conference will be preceded by an evening cocktail reception on
Friday, April 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Ukrainian National Museum at
23xx W. Superior in Chicago which will be showing a special Chornobyl
exhibit. On Sunday, April 30 at 10 a.m. a Divine Liturgy will
be held at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral at 2238 West Rice
Street to commemorate the victims of the Chornobyl accident.
