Curriculum:
Employer's Health & Safety Advisor
Goals: The
Advisor introduces managers and emplyees to the elements of
a comprehensive health and safety program. It should be used
in a cooperative spirit to educate the home care team about
the health and safety program, to identify strengths and to
identify areas that need improvement. At the end of this process
a plan may be developed to set goals and address areas for
improvement.
Objectives: Participants
will:
- read
the elements of the health and safety program and scoring
key.
- provide
a score for each of the program elements and report to their
group members.
- analyze
the scores to provide feedback on elements and create a plan
for action.
Time: 1
Hour
Materials
needed: Advisor checklist, large checklist on flip chart
where scores can be posted, markers
How
to conduct the activity: (Note: Underlined portions are
instructions to participants.)
The
facilitator will introduce the Advisor and ask participants
to read program elements. The facilitator will ask if
any program elements need further description or examples.
For each element identified the facilitor will read the element
first and then ask participants for examples. The facilitators
will also review the feedback or scoring letters (A, B, C,
D, and E) as points on a continuum of program development.
Participants will then form groups by employer or other criteria
so participants from the same workplace or providing service
under the same health and safety program may discuss and provide
feedback on advisor agenda elements together. The facilitator
will ask participants in each small group to first complete
the feedback form on their own and then to share their responses
with the group. In the process of discussion the facilitator
will encourage particpiants to share direct examples.
Each group should reach consensus on the feedback for each element.
The facilitator will ask for the groups to report on their
discussion emphasizing the element most developed in thr program
and what element needs the most improvement. The facilitator
will encourage groups with well-developed elements to share
their knowledge and experience with groups that need this expertise.
This feedback may remain posted so that during the content presentation
specific elements may be rpesented and discussed.
Summary:
Managers need to understand the range of elements that make
up a comprehensive health and safety program. BY identifying
the strengths of the current program, managers and employees
can work together to plan and implement elements that meet their
needs and make progress toward a quality, comprehensive health
and safety program.
