Curriculm:
Chemical Safety
Goals: An
important skill in deciding on the safe use of chemicals is
being able to read a material safety data sheet (MSDS) and using
the information provided to handle the chemical in a safe manner
from storage, transport, use and disposal. Additional skills
include effective communication about the kinds of chemicals
that need to be used.
Objectives: Participants
will:
locate information on a MSDS.
list
recommendations for reducing exposure to chemicals in the home
care setting.
list
steps in storing, using and disposing of chemicals.
Time: 1
Hour
Materials
needed: Bleach,'
MSDS, exercise questions, Chemical Safety Cards for bleach,
transparency, and markers.
How
to conduct the activity: The
unit leaders will explain that the aim of this activity is to
give participants an opportunity to develop recommendations
for the safe use of chemicals in the home care setting. The
unit leaders will form groups of three. The unit leaders will
distribute the material
safety data sheet for bleach,
the answer sheet, transparency and markers to all participants.
The Chemical
Safety Card should be given to the participants in half
of the groups. The instructor will ask the participants should
answer questions 1-9 by finding the answers in the MSDS (and
the Chemical Safety Card). The participants should then
discuss question number 10 and outline a plan. The participants
should be given about 30 minutes to complete the activity. The
resources that can be used include the chemical section of the
"FactPack" and section 7 of the "Advisor".
After the exercise the participants will report back their
findings. It is estimated that this activity will take approximately
1 hour.
Summary:
The
MSDS is one tool that is available to home care employers and
workers for making decisions about chemicals including drugs.
The least hazardous chemical should be selected for use and
procedures for storing, using, and disposing of chemicals should
written and communicated to workers.
