Curriculum: Driving Hazards

Goals: The rate of home care employee injuries due to vehicle incidents is 13 times the rate of the national average for all workers reported in the mid-1990's. Due to this experience and increased risk home care managers and employees should make a goal of reducing driving incidents and creating programs to address the high risk of vehicle incidents.

Objectives: Participants will:

  • review a driving incident scenario.
  • analyze the situation and identify steps where the health and safety program could address and prevent this incident.

Time: 1 Hour.

Materials needed: Unit activity, steps in the investigation process cut in strips for each group, masking tape for the strips, flip charts and markers.

How to conduct the activity: (Note: Underlined portions are instructions to participants.)

Unit leaders will form groups with participants and ask them to turn to Advisor Element 10: Incident Investigation. Unit leaders will ask participants to read the scenario and then respond by reviewing and sequencing the steps of the incident investigation. The small groups shall put the steps in order on a flip chart paper and post for the report back discussion. Small groups may then provide additional responses regarding policies that could be in place to prevent and address the incident. Unit leaders will provide 10 minutes for review and discussion of the activity and ask a recorder/reporter to provide group responses. Unit leaders will begin with one group and ask for their poster presentation and rationale for their order. Each group will report in turn. The unit leaders will then summarize with a general discussion of program responses and policies that may be implemented and share resources on prevention of driving incidents.

Summary: Due to the high rate of vehicle incidents for home care employees it is likely that these events have already occurred in most employment settings. A well-organized and thorough incident investigation may be utilized to identify causes and to plan prevention approaches. Many resources are available to create a program that includes training, scheduling, procedures and supplies to prevent incidents and support if incidents do occur.
