What Do You Want to Learn?
Goals: Paricipants
are most satisified with the learning experience if their
needs are recognized and met. The needs of the participants
should direct priorities, timing, emphasis and choices of
the training facilitator.
Objectives: Participants
will describe what they want to learn in the training program.
Time: 30
Minutes
Materials
needed: Flip charts anmd markers
How
to conduct the activity: (Note: Underlined portions are
instructions to participants.)
The
facilitator will ask participants to write out their goals
and needs for the training. The facilitator will begin at
one point of the circle and ask for participants to share
their needs. The facilitators will scribe their responses.
When all the needs are written, the facilitator will group responses
and state what will be covered in the training and discuss
choices with the group in terms of the schedule and agenda for
the training. In a train the trainer approach, participants
will choose which unit they will prepare and present. The facilitators
may also amend the agende to reflect the interests of participants,
scheduling a unit with high interest first and other units later.
The facilitators will keep the learning needs lists posted and
refer to this list at the close of the training to review what
has been covered and what needs additional research or training.
Summary:
Unit leader can learn a lot about participants by asking
them what they want to learn. Where possible, the needs of the
participants should direct choices in the agenda and topics
of discussion.
