The
Fire Service Occupational Health and Safety Program is a unique
core program contributed by the Occupational Health Nursing
Program. The Occupational Health Nursing Program has taken
a leadership role in bringing together a team of occupational
health researchers, practitioners, students, and fire service
groups to systematically study the worker and organizational
factors that contribute to musculoskeletal injuries among
firefighters and paramedics. The Fire Service Program has
NIOSH research grants to conduct an ergonomic study of the
fire service and to examine the effects of a physical fitness
program on work-related fatigue among firefighters. The Program
also organized a conference on the reduction of musculoskeletal
injuries in the fire service that was attended by over 100
fire service personnel from six states. In addition to its
excellent working relationship with area fire chiefs, the
Fire Service Program faculty serve as consultants to the International
Union of Firefighters. Our faculty have completed a mortality
study of Chicago firefighters and have co-edited the first
comprehensive text on the health and safety hazards of firefighting.
