Toxikon
is a consortium that unites the clinical toxicology programs
of Illinois to achieve a common mission of "diagnosing,
treating, and preventing poisonings in Illinois." The
members of the consortium include the Illinois Poison Center
at the Metropolitan Chicago Health Care Council, the Cook
County Bureau of Health Services, the University of Illinois
at Chicago, and the Rush-Prebyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center.
Toxikon was established in 1988 in response to a health care
initiative from the Chicago Community Trust. After demonstrating
the success of the program during a 4-year grant period, the
participating institutions elected to continue funding the
consortium through their own resources.
Toxikon
is administratively based in the Section of Clinical Toxicology,
Division of Occupational Medicine, Department of Medicine,
at Cook County Hospital. The consortium has a two-year ABMS-approved
medical toxicology fellowship program for physicians who have
completed primary training in emergency medicine, occupational
and environmental medicine, or pediatrics. Toxikon has also
participated in the emergency medicine/toxicology residency
for PharmD's at the University of Illinois. Toxikon offers
one-month clinical rotations in medical toxicology for residents
and medical students. Toxikon faculty and students participate
in daily clinical rounds, weekly grand rounds, weekly journal
club, and monthly conferences with the Cook County or University
of Illinois Departments of Emergency Medicine, Occupational
Medicine, and Pediatrics.
