PCBs in
Use and in Storage (page 2 of 3)
2. Ontario
Ontario. Ministry
of the Environment. Annual report on PCBs in storage. July 2000. (CD-ROM).
The inventory
does not include all federal PCB storage sites which are under Environment
Canada jurisdiction. There were 1574 active PCB storage sites in
Ontario as of July 2000, "however, the quantities and site information
are constantly changing".
The
Ontario data is divided into quantities of high-level PCBs (>10,000
ppm) and quantities of low-level PCBs (<10,000 ppm), and within those
two groups, into various types of PCBs. The totals for the different
categories are as follows:

In December
2001, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment announced a hazardous
waste plan with the intent to destroy remaining PCBs in storage within
a fixed time period. PCB waste in storage will be required to be destroyed
within 3 years, and a destruction schedule for PCB wastes that are placed
in storage after the regulation takes effect. PCBs stored at sensitive
locations such as schools and hospitals will have an accelerated deadline
of destruction within one year of the time the regulation takes effect.
The plan states
that about 99,000 tonnes of PCB waste remain in storage at over 1,000
sites in Ontario. 7,000 tonnes are high level (>1% PCBs) and 92,000
tonnes are low level PCB wastes. Every year more PCBs are being placed
in storage as electrical equipment is being decommissioned.
