World AIDS Day Activity

On World AIDS Day this year, December 1st, the Global Health Student Interest Group (GHSIG) will partake in an activity to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and condoms by distributing and making condom pins.  The condom pins are modeled after The Condom Project (http://www.thecondomproject.org/homepage.html), an organization that has representatives travel domestically and internationally working to de-stigmatize the condoms and increase their use among all sexually active people.  Dan Goldman, GHSIG co-organizer, met several staff members of The Condom Project in Bali, Indonesia this past summer at the Kerti Praja Foundation where he was completing his field experience.  After observing the positive reaction and impact the condom pin had on groups of people, especially high risk groups, Dan decided to organize this condom pin activity with GHSIG for World AIDS Day 2009.

The making of the condom pin is simple, yet extremely innovative, effective and fun.  The condom pin is made up of a condom, fabric, double sided tape and a pin - it only takes about two minutes to make!  The concept is also simple: to create a venue that cultivates dialog about the protective qualities of a condom, to get comfortable with condoms, and to facilitate discussion about condoms and HIV/AIDS.  On World AIDS Day, GHSIG members will be in the School of Public lobby from 10:00am-2:00pm with a table where students, faculty and staff can stop by to either take or make their own condom pin.  If you don't have a time then you can grab and condom pin and put in on, or if you have a few free minutes you can make your own.  Snack and refreshments will also be served at the GHSIG table on December 1st.

We look forward to seeing you there!
