ICHLD Workshops
Ethical Issues in Community Based Collaborative Research (PDF)
Participants
The workshops are designed to attract people recognized as having leadership
qualities by the people they work with but who are not necessarily "official"
leaders (those with executive titles). They are the people others look
to for advice and guidance in developing partnerships. Participants
have the potential for multiplying what they learn and for dealing with
structural change.
Methodology
The Center's methods include interactive workshops structured to guide
participants and prospective participants in community/university partnerships
to a better understanding of their own opportunities and challenges.
Workshops promote learning from the experience of others as well as
reflective analysis of participants' own situation. By providing information
and analysis tailored to the particular situations of participants,
and by participating as joint learners through comparisons of participants'
situations and their own experiences, the Center staff builds collective
expertise in the facilitation of partnerships.
Interactive
Model
ICHLD's interactive model has been developed over the past four years
as an effort to design a format for the sharing and generation of knowledge
about partnerships that is inclusive of the expertise and learning styles
of both community-based and university-based personnel. The model sharpens
the skills needed for practical action as well as the ability to generalize
lessons learned across contexts. ICHLD assumes that within each of the
participants are the skills and knowledge necessary to overcome barriers
to developing these kinds of relationships. The ICHLD workshops enrich
and add to the experiences and skills that participants will employ
in the resolution of problems faced in collaborative ventures. Staff
contribute skills developed in multiple organizational and community
contexts. Recognizing that learning occurs around the clock and not
just in formal sessions, ICHLD provides meals, breaks and other networking
opportunities so that participants will learn from each other.
Follow-up
Effective follow up is critical to the reinforcement of the ICHLD learning
experience. Keeping in touch with participants provides not only opportunities
for consultation but also additional knowledge about the collaborative
process that can be incorporated in future workshops. The applicability
of skills and lessons conveyed in the workshops often becomes clear
once participants return to their jobs. Communicating with them after
some period of months provides additional feedback on the appropriateness
of workshop activities and strategies.
Workshop
Offerings
Workshops offered by the International Center for Health Leadership
Development highlight the benefits of successful partnerships and collaborations.
In keeping with those themes, the faculty — representing both academe
and community-based organizations — use presentations, small group
work, leadership stories, active learning, reflection, networking, and
site visits to accomplish the objectives of each workshop. Multiculturalism
is included as an theme integral to all Center activities.
