MPH Admissions Criteria

The most important qualities of successful applicants to the MPH Program are:

* Desire to be a change agent in public health programs and policies;
* Passion to improve the health status of communities;
* Willingness to develop and sharpen skills in critical and strategic thinking; and
* Skill as an excellent communicator (written and verbal).

We want to have a good mix of students, some with public health experience and some just entering the field.  Applications from people with experience are given priority, but about half of each entering class is coming to us right out of college.

    * Candidates must have at least a BA or BS degree.

    * Unless the applicant qualifies to waive them, GRE scores or scores from a relevant standardized test are required.  Students with a relevant graduate degree do not have to submit standardized scores.  Others may petition the Director of HPA for a waiver.

We look at the whole application, paying particular attention to the personal statement and letters of recommendation.  As for “the numbers,” most of our MPH students have above average scores on the GREs (greater than 1000 on verbal and quantitative combined) and have a B average or better in undergraduate work.
