Welcome to

The Midwest Center for
Health Workforce Studies,
formerly the Illinois Regional Health Workforce Center.

The Center is in its final year of a five-year cooperative agreement by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Bureau of Health Professions. The change in our name reflects an expansion of the geographic scope of our work to the regional level. The Center mission remains the same: to conduct research on the health workforce to improve health workforce policy and planning at the state, Midwest regional and national level, which leads to increased access to care for underserved populations.

The Midwest Center for Health Workforce Studies:

  • is a resource for health workforce data, research and policy analysis
  • conducts analyses of the supply, demand, diversity, training and professional practice in nursing, medicine, dentistry, public health, pharmacy, occupational therapy, and genetics
  • offers technical assistance to organizations seeking health workforce information
  • collaborates with health educational institutions, state-level administrative
agencies, policy makers, and health advocates

MCHWS to Conduct a Statewide Genetics Plan

The Illinois Department of Public Health contracted with our Center to develop an Illinois statewide genetics needs assessment. The project assessed the role and function of the state health department with regard to current and future needs relating to genetic policy, service provision, community education, research & surveillance needs. The information from this needs assessment will be used in the next phase of the project, the development of a genetic services state plan for Illinois.
