Illinois was recognized last year by the CDC for having a model perinatal HIV prevention program. February 25, 2009Unnatural Causes...is inequality making us sick? Viewing of When the Bough Breaks and a discussion Unnatural causes is a seven part documentary series exploring racial and socioeconomic inequalities in health. The episode features the story of Kim Anderson, a successful lawyer, executive and mother. She did her best to ensure that her baby was healthy and received good prenatal care. However, two and a half months before her due date, she went into labor and her baby weighed less than three pounds. What happened? For highly educated African American women like Kim, income and status do make a difference, but there's still something else at play: racism. Fall 2008Wednesday, October 15, 2008Domestic Violence: A Private Matter or a Public Health Issue? October was domestic awareness month, which gave us an opportunity to talk about domestic violence and how it affects women, children, and families, and what we can do to address this issue. We learned about domestic violence, what is being done to address it at the community level, and we participated in a discussion about what role public health professionals can play in ending violence against women and their families.
Spring 2008January 30, 2008Missy Lavender, Executive Director and Founder, and Jennifer Hebert-Beirne, Vice President of Development & Research of Women's Health Foundation (WHF) overviewed pelvic health as a public health priority, presenting the epidemiology, social context and treatment approaches of Urinary Incontinence (UI) among women. Urinary incontinence prevalence, co-morbidities and treatment options were also discussed. A brief seated demo of Total Controlâ„¢, a WHF pelvic health fitness program clinically proven to reduce (or eliminate!) bladder control problems, improve quality of life and strengthen orgasms, was given. Fall 2007October 17, 2007Katharine Bensinger, M.S., LCPC, discussed the Community Counseling Centers of Chicago's Parenting Education Program and its four core components: parenting classes, home visits, support services, and an ongoing support group. September 19, 2007Victoria Persky, M.D., Professor of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the UIC SPH, gave an update on her PEPs trial, a research project that has focused on the environmental aspects of the early childhood asthma prevalence in Chicago. September 11, 2007Dr. Michele Kelley and Christine Bozlak presented, "Youth Participation as a Protective Factor: Implications for improving adolescent well-being and community capacity for health." Dr. Myrtis Sullivan and Michael Rodriguez-Muniz were discussants for this presentation. Interest Group. February 21, 2007Dr. Barbara Risman, Co-Chair of the Council on Contemporary Families (located at UIC) presented on the mission and work of the newly established Council. April 18, 2007Dr. Laurie Schaffner from the UIC Dept. of Criminal Justice presented the qualitative
research she has done involving youth in trouble with the law and the
sociological and political responses by the juvenile corrections systems,
both legal and psychiatric. |
