MCHP Student Profile

Allison Flynn
I chose UIC because⦠I knew I wanted to focus on global maternal and child health issues--and UIC offered the combination that fit everything I was looking for. This combination of community health, maternal and child health, and global health in such an integrated curriculum will provide me with the tools I need to succeed as a public health practitioner.
Off-campus job: I work in a nursing home in the Western suburbs, where I run cognitive and social activities for a unit of residents suffering from Alzheimer's and Dementia.
Involved in:
Maternal and Child Health Planning Committee, running media at my local church
What's next:
After graduation, I hope to be working abroad with an organization that is working in communities to address the needs of women, including capacity building of community health workers and increasing rates of skilled birth attendance.
Interesting fact: I grew up in and around Michigan State University athletics, and although I didn't attend there for college, I am the biggest MSU fan. Every year I make sure to get home during both the football and basketball seasons so that I can get to a game--my blood truly runs green!
Favorite Chicago Spots:
I live in the suburbs--but I love coming to Chicago in the summer. There are always outdoor concerts and festivals throughout the neighborhoods, and I often head over to free concerts in Millennium Park on warm summer evenings. My friends and I really enjoy exploring different neighborhoods like Wicker Park, which is full of eclectic bookstores, restaurants, and coffee shops.
Another interesting fact...
I spent six months living in India in 2008, working with a community health and development project in remote villages in the Himalayan foothills. I never expected to spend that much time riding on the back of motorcycles and hiking up and down mountains--and I loved every moment.
