Illinois Public Health Association Honors UIC Dean Susan Scrimshaw and StudentsSusan C. Scrimshaw, dean of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, received the Illinois Public Health Association’s 2006 Distinguished Service Award at a ceremony in Springfield April 25.
“For the past 11 years, Dean Scrimshaw has provided wisdom, leadership and passion for public health at the local, state, regional, national and international levels,” according to the citation accompanying the award.
Scrimshaw, who was nominated for the award by the students, faculty, staff and alumni of the UIC School of Public Health, was recognized for distinguished service in the areas of research, teaching and public health practice.
The award acknowledges her “tireless dedication and boundless enthusiasm for public health” and her leadership in public health education to help “students and graduates attain the skills, knowledge and compassion they need to pursue the vision of ‘Health for All’ and ‘Healthy People in Healthy Communities.’”
Scrimshaw will end her twelve-year tenure as dean when she assumes her new position as president of Boston’s Simmons College on July 1.
The Illinois Public Health Association also honored four UIC School of Public Health students.
Christina Welter received the Public Health Student Worker of the Year Award for her leadership in emergency preparedness at the local, state and regional levels.
Judson Allen received an Edith Heide Memorial Scholarship in recognition of his investigation of nutritional aspects of health disparities.
Vamsi Vasireddy won the doctoral-level poster competition for his research on “Social, Governmental and Public Health Leadership Issues Facing a Global Leprosy Eradication Program.”
Sarah Duggan Goldstein won the master’s-level poster competition for her investigation of “The Statewide Themes and Strengths Assessment Process and the State Health Improvement Plan: Utilizing IPLAN Data to Highlight Locally Determined Health Priorities in Illinois.”
