UIC Industrial Hygiene Student Association Wins AIHA Award We would like to congratulate our students, headed by graduate student Rob Malcolm and mentored by Dr. Steven Lacey, whose recently-formed Student Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (also known as the UIC Industrial Hygiene Student Association) was awarded the Student Local Section of the Year Award for 2006-2007 from the AIHA at the national conference in Philadelphia. This is especially noteworthy because the group only formed in September 2006, and has accomplished an enormous amount in that short time. Along with a plaque there was also a monetary award given to the section.
The UIC Industrial Hygiene Student Association is on of the most recent addition to AIHA’s Student Local Sections. The AIHA Chicago Local Section is the sponsor of UIC-IHSA, and graciously gifted the student group with start-up funds to help organize its monthly meetings. This new partnership formalizes the longstanding relationship between the Chicago Local Section and UIC students. The UIC-IHSA currently has 20 student members.
The founding leadership includes Sam Bigger as vice president and Alison Welch and Chirag Patel as secretaries. Activities to date include a dinner meeting with the Chicago Local Section and a panel exchange with faculty members to discuss current research in industrial hygiene. UIC-IHSA has been volunteering its time to assist a City of Chicago–UIC community health partnership aimed at educating local hardware store owners in providing equipment and information for lead-safe work practices. The group volunteered at the annual "Hustle up the Hancock" fundraiser race in the downtown Chicago John Hancock building for the American Lung Association. Members of the group have participated in Chicago Local Section professional development courses and a recent technical tour of the Chicago Field Museum. The group also plans on going to local universities to recruit students into graduate industrial hygiene programs.
