Announcing the 2008-2009 Public Health Practice Scholar Competition

Public Health Practice Scholars (Passaro Scholars)
Four UIC public health students will be selected as Public Health Practice Scholars (Passaro Scholars)for AY 2008-2009 (pending funding). Scholars will be assigned to an entity serving the health needs of the people of Illinois. Students may use the experience to fulfill practicum or internship requirements and will work on a project or projects during the 2008-09 academic year. Selected Scholars will receive a research assistantship @ 33% time (approximately 13 hours per week), which includes a tuition waiver and small stipend.

Deliverable
Project/practicum reports from each student participating. Brief assessment from the mentor(s) at the practicum site due at the end of the project period (May 9, 2009). Scholars will present their projects at the UIC SPH Annual Research Day and as such will abide by the guidelines pertaining to that day.

Eligibility
Applicant must be a UIC SPH student during the 2008-2009 academic year.

Nominating Process
Faculty are urged to encourage eligible students to apply. Students may also initiate the application process.

Application Process and Deadline
The application package should contain the following:

• A letter highlighting the applicant’s qualifications in academic excellence, leadership, and community service.

• A vita or resume.

• A copy of transcript. (Transcripts can be downloaded from the UIC Student and Faculty Self Service site at https://apps.uillinois.edu/selfservice/)

• Two letters of recommendation from SPH faculty members.

The application package should be submitted to Ms. Alyson Lofthouse, Office of the Dean, Room 1113 SPHPI. The application deadline is May 16, 2008.
