Congratulations to UIC SPH Award Winners!

William Baldyga, DrPH Associate Executive Director of IHRP, was awarded the Excellence in Public Health Policy Award by the IL Public Health Association on April 10, 2008.

Dulal Bhaumik, PhD, professor of Biostatistics, was named a Fellow in the American Statistical Association. Less than 1% of the members of ASA are named as Fellows.

Sylvia Furner, PhD, interim dean, was awarded the Special Recognition for Academic Excellence Award by the Academia Section of the IL Public Health Association on April10, 2008.

Susan Hughes, PhD, professor of Community Health Sciences and her research group have been selected for their Fit and Strong! program by the Healthcare and Aging Network (HAN) of the American Society on Aging, in collaboration with Pfizer Inc., as one of only six recipients of the 2008 Healthcare and Aging Awards.

Peter Scheff, PhD, professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, has been selected to receive the Air & Waste Management Association’s (A&WMA) Lyman A. Ripperton Environmental Educator Award on June 26, 2008.

Maria Silva, DDS MPH candidate, was awarded the Excellence in Rural Health Disparities Research Award by the National Center for Rural Health Professions at the UIC College of Medicine - Rockford’s Research Day on March 26, 2008.

Janna Stansell, an MPH student in the Community Health Sciences division, was named Public Health Student of the Year by the Illinois Public Health Association on April 10, 2008.

Leslie Stayner, PhD, and his colleagues were awarded the NIOSH Alice Hamilton Award for the category of Human Studies on May 1, 2008, for a series of three papers published last year on chyrsotile asbestos and malignant and non-malignant respiratory disease.

Alejandra Valencia, DDS MPH, UIC SPH alumni, was awarded the Young Public Health Worker Award by the IL Public Health Association on April 10, 2008.
