Beloved Teacher and Founder of the School of Public Health MournedOn Friday, June 6, 2008, the UIC School of Public Health community lost one of its most beloved members, Dr. Bernard Baum. Bernie, as he was known to many, was one of the original founders of the School of Public Health. He was published in the field of organizational behavior, and taught classes both at the School and at the College of Business Administration. He loved to teach and, consequently, was a loved teacher, being one of the few faculty members to win the Golden Apple Award twice. For many years, Bernie was the Director of Health Policy and Administration. Even after his retirement and his elevation to Professor Emeritus, Bernie still wanted to be in the classroom, to pass on his knowledge and his thoughts to the next generation of those who would protect the public’s health.
“For many of us, Bernie was a wise and caring mentor, dedicated to the dignity of the people with whom he worked,” said Associate Professor Dr. Daniel Swartzman.
“I am sure I am not alone in saying how much I will miss him. May his memory be a blessing to us all.”
Bernie devoted his life to serving the public and we are all deeply saddened by his passing.
“For those who had the privilege of knowing Bernie, let his memory be an inspiration for us to continue serving the public,” Interim Dean Dr. Sylvia Furner said.
