Dean Paul Brandt-Rauf, DrPH, MD, ScD
Dr. Paul W. Brandt-Rauf is currently the Dean of the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). In addition, he holds appointments as Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences in the School of Public Health, Professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine, Professor of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering, Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of Public Administration in the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.
Dr. Brandt-Rauf received his B.S., M.S., and Sc.D. in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and his M.D., M.P.H. and Dr.P.H. in Environmental Sciences from Columbia University. Dr. Brandt-Rauf did post-graduate training in anatomic/environmental pathology, internal medicine and occupational/environmental medicine, and he is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Royal Society of Medicine. After completing his post-graduate training, Dr. Brandt-Rauf joined the faculty of Columbia University where he was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, Professor of Medicine, Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering and Professor of International and Public Affairs. In 2008, he became Professor Emeritus at Columbia, when he assumed his current position at the UIC.
Dr. Brandt-Rauf’s major research interests are in occupational/environmental carcinogenesis, particularly the molecular structure-function relationships and the molecular epidemiology of cancer-related proteins. He has also written extensively on ethical issues in occupational/environmental health policy. He has authored over 210 journal articles and book chapters and edited several volumes on occupational/environmental health, and is currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He has been the recipient of many honors in occupational/environmental medicine, including the Robert R.J. Hilker Award of the Central States Occupational Medicine Association, the Carey Pratt McCord Lectureship of the Michigan Occupational Medicine Association, the Harriet Hardy Award of the New England College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Ronald Lane Lectureship at the University of Manchester, the Ferguson-Glass Lectureship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and the Robert A. Kehoe Award of Merit and the Meritorious Service Award of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. He has served as an advisor and consultant to industry, labor, academia and government, including the World Health Organization, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
