Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division Honors AlumnusThe Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health recently honored Paul Targonski with the Jacob Brody Distinguished Alumni Award for his contributions to the field of epidemiology and public health.
Targonski is currently a primary care physician and associate professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and holds an adjunct associate professorship in public health at the University of Minnesota.
During his graduate training at UIC, he completed internships at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the National Institutes of Health, where he received the U.S. Public Health Service Citation for Excellence in Research. After completing a residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, Targonski undertook post-doctoral training in statistical genetics and genetic epidemiology at the University of Oxford’s Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics in Oxford, England.
The Jacob Brody Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes the contributions and accomplishments of graduates of the EPI BIO Division of the UIC SPH. Director of the division, Leslie Stayner, said Targonski exemplifies true leadership in public health.
“Dr. Targonski is one those rare individuals who has been highly successful as both an epidemiologist and a clinician,” he said.
The award is named for Jacob Brody, a UIC SPH Alumnus, who has demonstrated leadership in the study of neurodegenerative diseases. In his current work with the school as professor emeritus, Brody has largely focused on continuing his research on aging and has been actively engaged in the academic programs.
In addition to the Jacob Brody Award, Targonski has been the recipient of numerous federal, academic society, and foundation grants and has authored a wide range of manuscripts affecting public health and medical practice.
