UIC Alumnus Named NIOHS Medical Officer The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the appointment of John Halpin, to Medical Officer of the NIOHS Emergency Preparedness and Response Office.
Halpin, an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, is Board Certified in Occupational Medicine and served as an undersea medical officer in the U.S. Navy for eight years prior to entering the Commissioned Corps as an EIS officer in 2007.
Before beginning his new assignment at NIOSH, Halpin was assigned to the Division of Unintentional Injury Prevention at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, where he worked with the motor vehicle team.
While a resident in occupational medicine at UIC, Halpin spent one month on a rotation with the NIOSH Health Hazard Evaluation Program and participated in the investigation of a firefighter hazardous exposure. Halpin received his medical degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, a Master of Public Health from the UIC SPH, and a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame.
