The content for PH 496 is provided in the following modules of the self-study course, Principles of Epidemiology, Second Edition (CDC, 1998):
For PH 496 learners are to complete each module in its entirety by reading the material and developing responses to the various exercises.
In addition, there are 3 activities associated with PH 496: (1) complete your individual exercises; (2) participate in a multi-learner conferencing exercise; and (3) complete and submit the assessment quiz. Each of these is explained below.
Carefully proceed through Lesson 6: Investigating an Outbreak, completing each of the exercises in this lesson. After completing the lesson and its exercises, each learner will submit a brief response to each of the following discussion questions and exercises. Approximately 100 words per response is suggested! Produce your answers on a separate document to be uploaded at the "Submit Assignments" link. Please use "PH 496 Individual Exercises" as the title of your submission.
Add your contributions to this multi-learner conferencing exercise. Produce your response on a separate document to be uploaded at the "Submit Assignments" link. Please use "PH 496 Conferencing Exercises" as the title of your submission.
Each learner will contribute to a simulation of a conferencing exercise involving other learners taking this course. This simulation exercise will take place at the PH 496 Conferencing Exercise site after you have downloaded and run the computer based case study "Botulism in Argentina." Follow the following link to access the download site, Botulsim in Argentina. Then install and run the case study (it can be completed in about 3 hours.
After completing the case study, indicate whether you believe the increase in botulism cases in 1998 was an indication that the Botulism Surveillance and Antitoxin Release Program had failed or not. Regardless or whether you believe it had failed or not, what changes might make the program more effective?
Post your brief response and rationale (100-200 words will suffice) after reviewing any postings from other course participants.
Follow the LearningSpace link to the Assessment Quiz. You may be asked for your login ID and password to access the quiz through your Preparedness Center Personal Page. Complete the quiz and submit your responses. You make take the quiz several times.
Course Evaluation: All learners are asked to electronically complete a Course Evaluation Questionnaire; this is available to you as an electronic form and will be transmitted to a data base without your identity being known, and your instructor will have no way to link your identity to your comments. Before participating in these course evaluation activities, students should review the specific learning objectives established for this course (and others you may have taken as part of this series); these are available in the Syllabus. Evaluation of the course should focus on the extent to which these objectives were achieved.
