“I moreover affirm that our wisdom itself, and wisest consultations, for the most part commit themselves to the conduct of chance.”

Grant Preparation
Steps for Grant Preparation
STEP 1: Adhere to this basic principle: Every study must be sufficiently powered to achieve its primary objectives. The starting place is to state your primary objectives. Rule of thumb: fewer primary objectives, smaller the total study sample size.
STEP 2: Identify your data and how you will use them to achieve each primary objective.
STEP 3: Fill in the following for each primary objective:
- Null hypothesis;
- The smallest “Effect Size” you want to be able to detect with your study;
- The statistical power you want for your study (conversely, the acceptable risk of a “false negative” study);
- The acceptable risk of a “false positive” study;
- Depending on the statistical method, you might have to supply some other information (e.g. standard deviation of the data).
