Cancer control programs are capable of lessening morbidity
and mortality rates, especially among racial and ethnic minorities. The
National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer (NBLIC) seeks to
deliver effective interventions through the development, implementation, and evaluation of culturally specific educational awareness programs for African-Americans, many of which can be transferred to other racial and ethnic minorities. Another objective of the initiative is to facilitate the inclusion of African-Americans as participants in research and clinical trials. To accomplish these goals, NBLIC has forged relationships with national and local organizations, designed and implemented interventions,
developed a website, and distributed educational materials, among other
endeavors. Currently, NBLIC is working on a program to emphasize the
role of diet and exercise in cancer prevention in addition to other
research projects and programs.
