September 27, 2003

On behalf of the School's Strategic Planning Committee, I would like to thank all of you who had the opportunity to participate in the Retreat a couple of weeks ago (September 13, 2002). We were extremely happy with the results. (Although you can imagine that we have a lot of material left to digest!) The ideas and insights generated were remarkable, as was the energy and willingness to work hard to improve the School.

The Committee wanted you to know where things were heading from here and how you can help us move things forward. Here is what we anticipate over the coming months:

Retreat analysis -- It will take us a couple of months to digest everything that happened at the retreat and to develop themes and specific ideas to move forward on.

Focus groups -- At the same time, we will also be moving forward on a series of focus groups to ask specific questions of constituencies who either have not had a chance to participate or who we think have more to offer.

Informational sessions -- There were a number of constituencies who, because of the timing of the Planning process, have not yet had an opportunity to have input (alumni, community partners, etc.) There were a lot of students who were willing to spend a part or all of their day to be at the Retreat, but many students couldn't make it, and we would like to hear from them, too. We also would like to hear from all staff (academic professionals, non-academic, civil service, etc.) beyond those who were able to make the Retreat, to hear their concerns. So, we hope to continue
over the next few months holding informal sessions with various"stakeholders."

Drafts and feedback -- Sometime after the first of the year, we hope to have drafts of the Plan for review, and we will be sure to create a variety
of opportunities for feedback on those drafts.

Final draft and ratification -- The Committee is planning to have a final draft done by May or June of 2003. We would hope that this would be ratified sometime in the early Fall semester of 2003.

We will need a lot of faculty, staff and student volunteers to help us with the tasks we just outlined. In particular, if you would be willing to help with the information sessions or staff one of the focus groups, let us know. When we have things for review and comment you will hear about them on the listserves. We will also post announcements at the Planning web-site, as well. Anyone can make comments or offer input or ask questions by sending an email to strategic@uic.edu

Again, thanks to all of you who made the Retreat such an exciting and
energizing experience. We look forward to working with all of you as we
finish this important task.
