Scholarships, Honors, and Awards

The UIC School of Public Health recognizes outstanding students, faculty, and alumni each year via numerous scholarships for academic and research achievements, and overall potential for success in the field. These awards are supported through generous contributions from donors within the public health community. This page contains information on the following types of scholarships, honors, and awards:

SPH-wide Student Scholarships and Awards

The School of Public Health awards scholarships to students demonstrating significant academic achievements, engagement in research pursuits, and educational interest in different areas of public health. Award announcements, application procedures, and deadlines will be made in the Fall and Spring terms via the SPHNEWS and SPHVIEWS listservs. Please find brief descriptions of each scholarship offered below:

Alan W. Donaldson Award - This award is presented annually to one graduating SPH student in recognition of academic achievement, qualities of leadership, and community service. It is the most prestigious award granted by the UIC School of Public Health and is a memorial to Alan W. Donaldson, ScD, a founding father of the School and its first Associate Dean. The winning student will be announced at the annual Spring Commencement in May. Applications due: Friday, February 12, 2010.

Amuwo Minority Scholarship - This scholarship is presented annually to one SPH student who demonstrates a commitment to working on health issues within the Black and African-American communities. This fund is named in honor of the school's former Associate Dean for community, government, and alumni affairs, Shaffdeen A. Amuwo, PhD, MPH, a dedicated advocate and mentor of minority students. Applications due: Friday, October 16, 2009.

Bonnie C. Minsky Award - This award is presented annually to one SPH graduate student whose research and education interests relate to maternal and child health, women’s health, healthy aging, and nutrition. Applications due: Friday, October 16, 2010.

Douglas Passaro Global Horizons Scholarship - This competition will assist graduate students with travel expenses associated with an international field experiences. Four awards of up to $3000.00 (per award) will be given during the AY 2009-2010 year (includes Summer, 2010). The most competitive applications will be from students seeking an experience that substantially broadens their understanding and application of public health in the world. Preference is given to proposals for projects in Latin America and Africa.For detailed information, please visit the Global Health Initiative Awards site: http://www.uic.edu/sph/global/travel_awards.shtml. Estelle Goldstein Memorial Scholarship - This scholarship is presented annually to one or more SPH graduate students with a demonstrated financial need and whose educational interests focus on issues surrounding aging and gerontology. EXTENDED DEADLINE! Applications due: Friday, February 12, 2010.

Loretta Pratt Lacey Memorial Scholarship - This scholarship is used as an incentive to encourage applications from African-American students at the doctoral level whose studies focus on women's health. This fund was established in memory of Dr. Lacey, a nationally renowned alumna and faculty member of SPH. Applications due: Friday, February 12, 2010.

Paul Q. Peterson Scholarship - This scholarship is presented annually to one or more SPH graduate/professional students interested in the practical application of public health delivery and/or research. Each year one master’s student and one doctoral level student may be awarded a PQP scholarship and named the "Paul Q. Peterson Public Health Master’s and Doctoral Scholars." Applications due: Friday, February 12, 2010.

Public Health Practice Scholars (Passaro Scholars) - Four UIC public health students will be selected as Public Health Practice Scholars (Passaro Scholars) for 2010-11 (pending funding). Scholars will be assigned to an entity serving the health needs of the people of Illinois. Past sites have included the Chicago Department of Public Health, Cook County Department of Public Health, Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois Public Health Institute. Students may use the experience to fulfill practicum or internship requirements and will work on a project or projects during the 2010-11 academic year. Selected Scholars will receive a research assistantship @ 33% time (approximately 13 hours per week), which includes a tuition waiver and small stipend. Applications due: Friday, May 21, 2010.

Scrimshaw Family Latino Health Scholarship - This scholarship is presented annually to one or more SPH graduate students of Latino/Hispanic origin or descent whose area of study focuses on improving the health of the Latino/Hispanic population. This award reflects the decades of research and service former Dean Susan C. Scrimshaw and her family have dedicated to improving the health of Hispanic and Latino families in the Americas. Applications due: Friday, October 16, 2009.

Divisional Student Awards

Information regarding student awards specific to your chosen division should be referred to your Academic Coordinator. Awards for some divisions include the following:

  • Epidemiology/Biostatistics – William Haenszel Memorial Scholarship; Epidemiology and Biostatistics Student Fund
  • Health Policy and Administration – Viron L. Diefenbach Award for Excellence in Student Research
  • Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences – Michael Bruton Workplace Safety Foundation Scholarship

William Haenszel Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship is presented annually to an outstanding student in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division. This award is acknowledged at a special awards ceremony, and the winner receives a voucher for $200 to be used for travel, books, software, or equipment relevant to their work. The intent of this award is to foster high quality research among Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division students. Application information can be obtained in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division Office.

Epidemiology and Biostatistics Student Fund - This award is presented annually to one or more SPH students enrolled in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Division for at least one year. Students must have financial need and have achieved at least a 4.5 Grade Point Average.

Viron L. Diefenbach Award for Excellence in Student Research – This award was established in memory of the second dean of the School of Public Health, provides an award each year to a student in the Health Policy and Administration Division. Each recipient is selected on the basis of a combination of academic achievement and financial need.

Michael Bruton Workplace Safety Foundation Scholarship – This award is presented annually to a SPH graduate students enrolled in the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division whose research interests focus on workplace safety.

Honorary Societies – Delta Omega, Lambda Chapter

SPH students may be recognized for their accomplishments by applying for entry into the Delta Omega Honorary Society. The Delta Omega Society is a national honorary public health fraternity established to recognize and encourage scholarship and research among those undertaking post-baccalaureate study in public health and to recognize attainment in the field of public health. Students, faculty, and alumni members are elected each year in April. Student members are elected from summer, fall, and spring semester graduates from all four degree programs.

Faculty Awards

The Bernard H. Baum Golden Apple Award is presented each year to a faculty member in recognition of outstanding teaching and unusual service to students at the School. The recipient is chosen by the student body and the award is presented by the Public Health Student Association President at the May Commencement.

Alumni Awards

The distinguished Alumni Achievement Award is the highest honor a University constituent alumni association can bestow. The award is presented to an individual who has brought honor to the University and the School of Public Health through significant contributions to the improvement of the public's health, to public health literature, and/or public health professional education. When an award is made, the Awardee is recognized at the May Commencement ceremony.

Staff Awards

Each year, funds from the Dean’s Fund for Excellence will provide two $1,000 UIC SPH Distinguished Service Staff Awards to one outstanding academic staff person and one outstanding sponsored program staff person. All eligible staff members, including support staff and academic staff, may be nominated.

2009-10 nominations must be submitted to the Dean’s Office by September 30th. The awards will be announced in November during the UIC Employee Appreciation Week. More information on staff eligibility and the nomination process can be found here.
