Why UIC SPH?
Choosing the UIC School of Public Health
An Investment in Yourself and the World
A center for ground-breaking research and visionary people, the UIC School of Public Health is a ubiquitous part of Chicago, a rich and diverse city that is always on display as an active part of our students’ lives.
UIC SPH students learn both inside and outside the classroom. They are in Chicago helping prevent inner-city violence, in Africa stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS, in South America bringing clean water to village families. They are working with local community organizations to fight childhood obesity and in Chicago’s underserved neighborhoods to bring prenatal care to expectant mothers and prevent infant mortalities.
Our internationally-renowned faculty is accessible and supportive. We have well-cultivated connections to the city’s public health departments and health care facilities. Our strong network of alumni is available to provide professional networking advice and career support.
But, don’t take our word for it. Hear it firsthand from our students, who love living and learning here:
“Chicago has a fascinating public health history, from cholera outbreaks and river reversals to efforts to reduce racial disparities in asthma and other diseases. This history has permeated my educational experience here in the classroom, and the opportunities for fieldwork are endless.”
>> Patrick LaRochelle, a UIC SPH graduate student in EPI BIO and aspiring physician. |

“Being in Chicago, the school allows students to learn in a living, breathing public health environment. Chicago is so diverse that the public health skills you learn and practice at UIC SPH are applicable to settings across the state, the country and internationally.”
>> Michelle Shade received her MPH in 2000 from UIC SPH and is now studying for her DrPH here while working on campus to help providers integrate mental health care into primary care for children. |

“It is almost impossible not to be introduced to public health opportunities in the city. Chicago is filled with public health educational, networking and career opportunities, and our professors have connections to many of these. My MPH field practicum was at the Illinois Department of Public Health, where I learned the ins and outs of a state government facility and networked with a host of public health professionals – unquestionably, an invaluable experience.”
>> Imani Lewis received her MPH in 2007 from UIC SPH and is now a MHA candidate here while working in the Health Policy and Administration division. |

“I see my education at SPH as laying the groundwork for a great research career. I chose UIC SPH for several reasons. The school’s outstanding faculty, degrees offered, coursework relevant to my goals and interests, reputation, and location in a world-class city were important factors. ”
>> Sarah Forrestal, a University Dean’s Scholar and UIC SPH doctoral student in CHS, who is working in maternal and child health research. |
