Dean's Message

From the Dean’s Desk

Welcome to the UIC School of Public Health, to shaping the future of public health and to making an impact!

Our bottom line is impact in the real world – translating our knowledge into action and our compassion into results.

UIC and the School of Public Health are committed to being agents of positive change in society, applying knowledge wisely, widely and humanely to build a better world.

Public health is the most interdisciplinary, and therefore, most challenging health profession. To practice it well requires an integrated knowledge of so many disciplines including molecular biology, the basic medical sciences, all the clinical disciplines, epidemiology, statistics, environmental sciences, psychology, sociology, anthropology, economics, administration and management, law, politics and policy, ethics, and so much more.

Even engineering, urban planning, education, architecture and social work are critical when it comes to implementing public health interventions or procedures.

One must gain an appreciation of the different ways all of this fits together; and that is what we make possible here at UIC SPH.

We pride ourselves on providing a quality, interdisciplinary education to our students through our four divisions – Community Health Sciences, Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Health Policy and Administration

Our school combines academic excellence with cutting-edge research and engaged community-based practice that focuses on eliminating health disparities and bringing public health solutions to communities in need.

Our faculty and alumni continue to make solid contributions in Chicago and across the globe. Their vision, resolve and ingenuity have built the foundation for a rich UIC public health legacy.

Our students learn, innovate, practice, research and challenge public health concepts in Chicago and in communities around the world.

As we continue to expand our neighborhood commitment, national scope and global reach, I invite you, as students, faculty, alumni and benefactors, to be part of shaping the next generation of public health leaders.
