Special Programs of Study

Industrial Hygiene (IH)

IH takes an interdisciplinary approach to addressing health hazards in the workplace and in the general environment. The MS and MPH curricula give students both quantitative skills and field experiences that link exposure assessment to hazard reduction. Research skills are emphasized in the MS, while the MPH offers primarily a practice-based approach to the field.

Hazardous Substances Academic Training

HSAT is a subspecialty of the industrial hygiene program that requires courses in ground water contamination, hazardous materials management and participation in the 40-hour General Site Worker course, in addition to the general industrial hygiene program course work requirements. The goal is to develop practitioners and researchers who will solve problems in interdisciplinary settings.

Occupational Safety

OS provides students pertinent scientific, engineering and public health training to help them protect workers and the general public from injury.  Students may obtain a MS or MPH degree, taking courses in Public Health and Engineering.

Residency in Occupational Medicine

This is a two-year, ACGME-accredited training program leading to a MPH degree and board eligibility in Occupational Medicine.  It is open to physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited internship year in the U.S. and are eligible for medical licensure in Illinois.

Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology

EOHS provides a MS and PhD with an emphasis in Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology.  Students do their course work in both EOHS and Epidemiology.

Joint Degrees

Certificates

Environmental Health Informatics Certificate (EHI)

The EHI Certificate provides a background in the major Environmental Health Informatics themes including data mining, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and quantitative risk management.
