Industrial Hygiene
Industrial Hygiene (IH) Training is provided within the Environmental
and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS) Division in the University of
Illinois School of Public Health. The division includes six principal
faculty with expertise in exposure evaluation/reconstruction, risk evaluation,
environmental modeling, occupational safety and engineering control;
and support faculty in occupational and environmental medicine, epidemiology,
toxicology, chemistry, biostatistics, and water pollution control. The
IH program supports students in all degree categories (MS, MPH, DrPH,
PhD). The MS and MPH curricula are accredited by ABET. In addition, the
MS curriculum and training program is supported by a NIOSH training grant
and has been designated by the US Dept. of Energy (DOE) as a participant
in DOE's Industrial Hygiene Fellowship Program. Major educational goals
are: (1) to develop industrial hygiene practitioners with as much practical
experience as possible within the limits of an academic program; and
(2) to provide a cadre of trainees, having aptitude for research, with
research experience in occupational and environmental health. The overall
emphasis of the training program is to give our students quantitative
skills to aid them in solving workplace and environmental problems. In
order to maximize field experience all trainees take part in one of our
extended plant tests. To foster understanding of the interdisciplinary
nature of achieving solutions to problems of occupational/environmental
health, all trainees also actively participate in occupational medicine
clinics.
