Hazard Evaluation
Environmental
Health Hazard Evaluations: The Center and the Illinois Department
of Public Health (IDPH) currently have an agreement to coordinate
in the performance of Health Hazard Evaluations, but up until
now, have only had funds to perform such evaluations with
support from an interested party. The Great Lakes Center
of Excellence in Environmental Health program now allows local
public health agencies to request assistance from the Center
to perform comprehensive environmental health hazard investigations.
The Center and IDPH will triage these requests according to
the capabilities of the Center and IDPH, and the potential
benefits to the public health of the affected parties and
the regional community. The evaluations will also serve to
provide public health agency personnel with education and
experience that they might not otherwise receive.

The
Center would provide assistance to the local public health
agencies by donating a reasonable amount of its expertise,
equipment, and field assistance to the requesting agency.
It is estimated that the Center could perform one to three
health hazard evaluations in the first year of this program.
If the investigation is research oriented, additional financial
assistance or non-HHE financial assistance may also be requested
under the following program:
Health
Department Pilot Research Grants Program: the Great
Lakes Center of Excellence in Environmental Health program
will implement a pilot research grants program designed
to support local health departments in research involving
the recognition and response to public health issues. The
goal is to promote community-based intervention research.
Development of research partnerships between public health
agencies, individuals, and other institutions is encouraged.
The Center is also available to assist in developing and
performing research in partnership with a local health agency
for organizations that have not conducted such work in the
past. The public health agencies will submit short applications
for research funding, and these applications will be reviewed
by a research committee for merit once per year. Note: Research
involving human subjects must be reviewed and approved by
a federally approved review board before fund awards will
be released.
