Fish Consumption Advisories

For every Great Lake and a majority of their tributaries, there is a fish advisory in place to safely limit consumption of contaminated fish. PCB-based fish advisories are issued at 36 of 43 areas of concern (along with mercury). In most cases fish advisories are based on preventing health effects in women of child-bearing age, the developing fetus and young children. These special groups need to limit their consumption of PCB-contaminated fish, and at minimum avoid older, fattier fish.

A Broad Range of Advisories and Information

The U.S. EPA has a database that contains all available fish advisories in the U.S.; queries are made on a map, and different areas and contaminants can be chosen.
