ASHRAE 2009 Student Design Project Competition

The ASHRAE 2009 Student Design Competition features a 15,650 ft2 office building. The office building includes first floor parking, second floor retail and office space, third floor office space. The teams may compete in one of the three categories:

HVAC Systems Selection:
Use life-cycle cost process to select the building HVAC system(s) and incorporate the sustainability process promoted by ASHRAE by integrating the US Green Building Council's LEED™ Rating System
HVAC System Design:
Determine heating and cooling loads, and design an HVAC system for the office tower while complying with ASHRAE Standards 55-2004, 62.1-2004 and 90.1- 2004.
Integrated Sustainable Building Design/Architectural Design HVAC & other Building Service Systems:
Teams are asked to design their own building for the program described in the effort to approach a Zero energy building. Students will be asked to document select LEED credits (or equivalent energy rating system in their home country) to measure how their design meets the sustainability goals. An emphasis in ISBD or whole building design is on architectural, construction, mechanical, electrical and other technical systems integrated approach throughout the design process.

Eligibility:

Entries may originate from an undergraduate engineering or architecture curriculum. All team members must be enrolled in an undergraduate program during the semester/term they contribute to the design. Projects submitted by graduate students are not eligible.

Awards:

First Place:
$1,500 Plus a representative from the team will receive free transportation, two nights lodging and $100 expenses for attendance at the ASHRAE 2010 winter meeting in Orlando, FL where the award will be presented.
Second Place:
A representative from the team will receive free transportation, two nights lodging and $100 expenses for attendance at the 2010 winter meeting in Orlando, FL where the award will be presented.
Third Place:
A representative from the team will receive free transportation, two nights lodging and $100 expenses for attendance at the 2010 winter meeting in Orlando, FL where the award will be presented.

P3: Student Design Competition for Sustainability

EPA is seeking applications to research, develop, and design solutions to real world challenges involving the overall sustainability of human society. Applications can address any of these research areas: Agriculture, Materials and Chemicals, Energy Information Technology, Water, & Built Environment. The P3 (People, Prosperity, Plant) Award Program is open to degree-granting public & private institutions of higher education located in the U.S. See the P3 website for more details about the program.

Phase I up to $10,000 grant for one year, Phase II grants not more than $75,000for up to two years

Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ASCA) Design Competitions

Deadline:

Online registration opens Dec. 5, 2008 and closes Feb. 9, 2009

Eligibility:

Open to upper level students (third year or above, including graduate students students) from ACSA member schools in the U.S., Canada and Mexico only. All student entrants are required to work under the direction of a faculty sponsor. Entries will be accepted for individual as well as team solutions. Teams must be limited to a maximum of five students. Submissions should be principally the product of work in a design studio or related class.

Awards:

Student First Prize $2,500 ($1,000 for faculty)

Next Generation Design Competition, Metropolis Magazine

The 2009 competition seeks entries that address rising energy costs, which present new design problems. The competition asks applicants to describe how they would (1) redesign the broken models of the twentieth century, (2) challenge our patterns of living and working in a fuel-hungry world, and (3) come up with solutions that connect us, make us more efficient, more humane. Focus on one area that needs fixing--products, interiors, buildings and landscape, communication systems--and develop that idea fully.

Eligibility:

Open to all designers in practice 10 years or less. Graduate Student, Ph.D./M.D./Other Professional , Undergraduate Student in Architecture, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture or Design, Urban Planning or Policy.

National Network for Environmental Management Studies (NNEMS) Fellowship Program.

Purpose is to provide students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study by:

  • Providing students with practical research opportunities and experiences in EPA's program and regional offices and in its laboratories
  • Increasing public awareness of and involvement in environmental issues
  • Encouraging qualified individuals to pursue environmental careers
  • Helping defray the costs associated with the pursuit of academic programs related to the field of environmental protection, such as pollution control, science, engineering, technology, social science, and specialty areas.

The fellowships are organized among the following five categories:

  • 1. Environmental Policy, Regulation, and Law
  • 2. Environmental Management
  • 3. Environmental
  • 4. Public Relations and Communications
  • 5. Computer Programming and Development

Sponsor:

United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

Award:

Students selected receive a grant award in the form of a stipend paid in monthly installments based on the duration of the project. Grant awards reflect an individual student's level of education, location and duration of the fellowship, and are based on the current General Schedule (GS)-04 through GS-09 federal pay scale.

Chicago Conservation Corps (C3)

C3 is an initiative of the Chicago Department of Environment, which - in collaboration with Partner organizations - supports C3 Leaders by providing training, technical assistance and resources. The mission of the Chicago Conservation Corps is to recruit, train and support a network of volunteers who work together to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods through environmental service projects that protect our water, clean our air, restore our land and save energy.
