Green Buildings
During his term, University of Illinois President B. Joseph White directed that all new construction projects and major renovations be at least certified LEED® at the Silver level.
This is in line with the Green Building Guidelines for State Construction, which applies to all new state-funded building construction and major renovations of existing state-owned facilities.
All future new construction, remodeling, and renovation projects at UIC of $5 million or greater will be built at least to the LEED® Silver Certified standard. Projects totaling less than $5 million should comply with the LEED® Silver requirements to the greatest extent practicable (certification is not required).
Under this guidance new buildings should be constructed to be significantly more energy efficient than the current standards and most likely will utilize renewable energy. Green building standards have been incorporated into the UIC campus building standards and a formal green building policy is being developed.
