Sustainable Mugs
The UIC Bookstores, UIC Convenience Stores and the UIC Student Centers Board are proud to provide customers with the opportunity to help preserve the environment. Each year the UIC Convenience Stores’ customers use over 100,000 paper coffee cups and together we can better preserve the environment by reducing paper cup usage.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
USE A SUSTAINABLE MUG- Purchase a mug made from 100% corn plastic from any of our five UIC Convenience Store locations, the UIC Medical Bookstore or the UIC Bookstore. The mugs are microwave safe, non-toxic and last for many years under normal use. In a composting facility however, they can be completely degraded in as little as 90 days! Mugs are made from an annually renewable resource, using no petroleum as a raw material. The mugs’ manufacturing process uses 68% less energy, produces 65% fewer carbon emissions and conserves water. The UIC Convenience Stores will donate the cost of the paper cup to one of three designated non-profit environmentally friendly organizations.
How it works at the UIC Convenience Stores:
- All UIC Convenience Stores are equipped with Sustainability Donation Containers
- When the customer uses their UIC Sustainable Mug they receive 20 oz for the price of a 16 oz large coffee.
- They will also be given a 5-cent token at the registers.
- The customer then places the token in the Sustainability Container for the environmentally friendly and non-profit organization of their choice:
