Community Snow Removal
Help everyone walk in a winter wonderland this semester!
Did you know that in Chicago, laws require that sidewalks be shoveled for pedestrians?
Help Your Neighbors!
The Office of Sustainability is working with the Active Transportation Alliance to ensure UIC’s campus and neighborhood is pedestrian-friendly this winter. We are gathering a team of volunteers who will pitch in by distributing fliers, talk to local residents, and maybe even shovel sidewalks for those in our community who need assistance.
Take Action!
- Join our team that informs/rewards/helps our community.
- Distribute Fliers to residents and local businesses.
- Lend a hand when you see someone struggling with shoveling.
Why Shovel?
The Office of Sustainability wants to make sure our communities are still places anyone can easily walk. Clear sidewalks make it easier and safer for people to get around. It's the neighborly thing to do! People on foot or on wheelchairs rely on having clear sidewalks.
What happens if I don’t shovel?
People who rely on sidewalks – seniors, people with disabilities and children – need a clear space to walk or roll. Snow or ice-covered sidewalks force people to travel in the street and discourage people from walking at all. They might get in their car instead or just not leave their house.
