Waste
Solid Waste
UIC collects and/or contracts for all solid waste and recycling collection through the Transportation and Grounds department. The UIC Medical Center contracts for its own solid waste collection. The Office of Sustainability has begun tracking all waste generated, including recycling rates, and will generate reports on this data.
Landscaping Waste
All landscaping waste is collected on campus for composting, as required by Illinois regulation. Composting is done off-site and the quantities are tracked through the recycling program.
Light Bulbs
Lamping Services collects the fluorescent light bulbs that it removes and these are recycled as universal waste.
Chemical and Radioactive Waste
The Environmental Health and Safety Office handles the collection of hazardous wastes including chemical and radioactive waste. For more information, view the "Waste Disposal" section on the EHSO website. The Hazardous Waste Disposal Manual has answers to many questions about waste disposal.
Potentially Infected Medical Waste (aka Biohazardous Waste)
The disposal contract for this waste is handled through the Medical Center’s Environmental Services. For more information see http://www.uic.edu/depts/envh/HSS/PIMW.html.
