September 13-17 will mark the UIC’s third annual Sustainability Week, five days of activities to help the campus learn how to conserve resources and build a more sustainable community.  If you require any accommodations to participate in these events please contact Joe Iosbaker, 3-9816, iosbaker@uic.edu.

Re-Thinking Soup: Vertical Farms in Chicago

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum’s regular local, organic soup lunch + discussion moves to the west side of campus this week for a scheduled talk by John Edel, UIC Alumnus and founder of the Chicago Sustainable Manufacturing Center, who will discuss the CSMC’s latest efforts to create “The Plant,” an adaptive reuse project in Chicago’s historic Union Stockyards.

Film Screenings: Food, Inc.

Due to the sensitive nature of data often found on U of I equipment, unwanted computers and electronics in departments cannot simply be taken to recycling centers.  Fill out the necessary forms at http://go.uic.edu/CERC and bring these items to the lot directly south of the Hull-House Museum.

Sustainability Lunch & Learn: Garbage & Global Climate Change

Bring your lunch, hang out with other UIC community members, and learn something about the sustainability issues facing us today.  President of Landfills+, Inc. and Earth & Environmental Sciences Research Professor Jean E. Bogner, PhD, will discuss how waste management can impact our greenhouse gas emissions.  This is the first in a year-round monthly series on sustainability.  Pastries from Greektown’s Pan Hellenic Bakery will be served.

September 17: Walk, Pedal, Ride

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event that inspires city dwellers everywhere to transform metered parking spots into temporary parks for the public good.  Come enjoy two temporary public parks made from transformed UIC parking lot spaces on both sides of campus.

Active Transportation Fair

East Side Quad

Stop by the fair to learn more about bicycling and public transportation options on campus and in the Chicago region.  Exhibitors include the Active Transportation Alliance, the Commuter Student Resource Center, Rapid Transit Cycleshop, ZipCar, I-Go, CTA, Mayor Daley’s Bike Ambassadors, and the Office of Sustainability.

 

Green Youth Revolution 1st General Meeting

Join one of UIC's student organizations for the year's first meeting as get reintroduced, talk about plans to improve UIC's sustainability effort, planned events for the semester, and open the floor to newcomers to voice their opinions. Afterwards, there will be a special presentation by the Office of Sustainability regarding recycling on campus.
