WHAT:
The University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest institution of
higher learning in the
Chicago area, one of 88 Research I universities in the United States, and an
increasingly significant
center for education, research, and public service.
WHERE: Click for travel directions UIC is just west of Chicago's Loop. The campus includes 90 buildings on 216 acres bounded on the east by Clinton Street and on the west by Leavitt Street. Most of the campus is south of the Eisenhower Expressway and north of Roosevelt Road. Current value of UlC's land, buildings, and equipment is estimated at more than $1 billion. WHO: More than 24,000 students (approximately 66% undergraduate, 34% graduate and professional degree students); and 11,000 full-time faculty and staff. ACADEMIC ORGANIZATION:
ADMINISTRATIVE ORGANIZATION: The Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois is responsible for examining and defining broad policy and financial issues. The University president, reporting to the board, initiates and guides overall University development. UIC's chancellor, who reports to the president, is the chief executive officer of the campus. DEGREES: Doctorates in 57 specializations, master's degrees in 83 disciplines, bachelor's degrees in 92 academic areas. BUDGET: Operating budget for fiscal year 1997 is $926 million; of that total, $310 million (or 33 percent) is state appropriated. RESEARCH: Total research expenditures for FY95 were $119.4 million. ATHLETICS: UIC fields 14 teams in NCAA Division I Intercollegiate athletics. The UIC Pavilion is the home of the UIC FIames in basketball. |
