CLERKSHIP REQUIREMENTS

CLERKSHIP REQUIREMENTS

Policy and Procedure

  1. Students must be in good academic standing in order to graduate (i.e. GPA must be 2.0 or greater). To be sure that students are adequately prepared to enter the experiential portion of the curriculum, students who have completed all didactic requirements and have a GPA of less than 2.0 are subject to the following policies.

Students entering clerkship in May 1995 or beyond:
  • All students must begin the clerkship sequence with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. If a student has a GPA of < 2.0 (i.e. is hours down) then he/she will be required to repeat selected core courses as determined by the Academic Standing Committee for which a D grade was received. In addition, the Academic Standing Committee may also require that the student repeat elective courses offered by the Department of Pharmacy Practice for which a D grade was received. The student must receive sufficiently high grades in these courses to obtain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above. The student will be allowed one calendar year to complete these courses. In extreme cases, the Academic Standing Committee can extend this time period to two calendar years.
  1. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) is the administrative unit responsible for implementing this policy in concert with the Academic Standing Committee.OSA will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a data base of entry level and CCO students on probation with a cumulative GPA < 2.0 (hours down). OSA will notify the Academic Standing Committee of any student who has a cumulative GPA < 2.0 (i.e. is hours down) and ready to start the clerkship sequence in the curriculum. The Academic Standing Committee will make the final determination of the student's status including exceptions to this policy.

  2. The Office of Student Affairs will send a letter at the beginning of each semester to each student on probation reminding them of this policy and the grade point average needed to begin clerkship.
