fitzsimmons William Fitzsimmons, BS '83
Senior Vice President, Astellas Pharma Global Development, Inc.

Bill currently serves as senior vice president of US Development for Astellas. He previously also served as vice president of business development. Prior to the merger forming Astellas in 2005, he was with Fujisawa Healthcare for 15 years. He also currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization (iBIO).

 Michael Flavin, PhD '83
CEO, Advanced Life Sciences

Michael T. Flavin, chief executive officer and chairman, founded Advanced Life Sciences, Inc. in 1999. Prior to this date, he was the founder, chief executive officer and chairman of MediChem Life Sciences, Inc., a drug discovery technology and services company. Dr. Flavin took MediChem from start-up in 1987 through many stages of development including the completion of MediChem's private placement, the acquisition and integration of the ThermoGen and Emerald Biostructures as MediChem subsidiaries and MediChem's initial public offering October 2000. MediChem, as a subsidiary of deCODE, through May 2002. Dr. Flavin received a bachelor of science degree in Chemistry from the University of Notre Dame, a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Chicago and he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University. Dr. Flavin is an adjunct professor for the department of medicinal chemistry and pharmacognosy at UIC College of Pharmacy. He was featured on the cover of the UIC Alumni magazine's May/June 2006 issue and is a past recipient of the Sister Margaret Wright Graduate Award. Dr. Flavin is the brother of John L. Flavin and Patrick W. Flavin.

 

Jane Hsiao, PhD ' 73

Vice Chairman, OPKO Health

 Dr. Hsiao has served as vice-chairman and chief technical officer of the company since May 2007. Dr. Hsiao served as the vice-chairman of technical affairs of IVAX from 1995 to January 2006, when Teva acquired IVAX. Dr. Hsiao served as IVAX's chief technical officer since 1996, and as chairman, chief executive office and president of IVAS Animal Health, IVAX's veterinary products subsidiary, since 1998. From 1992 until 1995, Dr. Hsiao serve das IVAX's chief regulatory officer and assistant to the chairman. Dr. Hsiao has served as chairman of the board of the Board of the Safestitch Medical, Inc. (OTCBB:SFES), a medical device company, since September 2007. Dr. Hsiao is also a director of Modigene, Inc. (OTCBB:MODG), a development stage biopharmaceutical company.

Steve Karagiannis is a distinguished alumnus of UIC College of Pharmacy. He is an independent pharmacy owner benefactor. Mr. Karagiannis is a President's Council member. He and his family were featured in the Fall 2008 UIC Pharmacist magazine.  

 

 

 

Mike Maddux
Executive Director, ACCP

 Dr. Maddux's previous contributions to the profession have included serving as a member of the Missouri Task Force on the Mission of Pharmacy and the Missouri Board of Pharmacy Task Force on Scope of Practice Protocols. He has been an active member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, serving on the association's Professional Affairs Committee, Task Force on Recruitment and Retention of Pharmacy Practice Faculty, and Section of Teachers of Pharmacy Practice Annual Program Committee. Dr. Maddux has served the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education as an Evaluation Team Member, was a member of the Illinois Commission of Pharmacy, and contributed to the ASHP Research and Education Foundation as a member of their Fellowship Selection Committee. Dr. Maddux is a 1980 graduate of the college's residency program and is married to a dual-degree alumnus of the college, Susan Maddux.

 

 

manasse Henri Manasse, BS '68
Executive Vice President, ASHP 

 Dr. Manasse, PhD, ScD, is executive vice president and chief executive officer of the American Society of Heath-System Pharmacists (ASHP) and a highly respected educator and leader in pharmacy and healthcare. He was named as a fellow of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). He currently serves on, and has previously chaired, the Board of Directors of the National Patient Safety Foundation. He also represents ASHP at the National Quality Forum, where he co-chaired the Safe Practices Steering Committee. He chaired the Sentinel Event Alert Advisory Group at the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO). He was recently appointed to the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2005, he was elected as the Professional Secretary of the Board of Pharmaceutical Practice of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). He also is serving on the Board of Advisors of the Association of Academic Health Centers project on the Future of Health Professions Work Force. He presently serves as a senior policy fellow with the Center on Drugs and Public Policy at the University of Maryland. In 1996 he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Manasse was the recipient of the 2007 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award. He is also the author of several books and has published extensively in health sciences literature. From 1981-1993 he served as dean at UIC College of Pharmacy. He is a President's Council Member and a life member of the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

 

Scott McKibbin
Special Advocate for Prescription Drugs, State of Illinois

McKibbin has 15 years experience in consulting with states to achieve savings on prescription drug spending and designing discount card programs. Most recently, he served as a senior consultant for Health Management Associates in Chicago.

 

pilkingtonMark Pilkington, BS '84, MS '88
Vice President Managed Care Product Strategies, Cardinal Health Inc.

Between 1990 and 1997, Pilkington served as executive director of the Illinois Pharmacists Association. He was the director of pharmacy affairs at Pharmacia Corporation, where he was responsible for building relationships with pharmacy professional groups from 1998 to 2003. He is the past president of the UIC Pharmacy Alumni Association Board of Directors and was voted Alumnus of the Year in 2003. He currently serves as the Sesquicentennial Development Subcommittee chair.

 

 

 

 

provenzaonAnthony Provenzano, PharmD '92
Director of Clinical Programs, SUPERVALU Pharmacies, Inc.

Dr. Provenzano is currently director of clinical programs for SUPERVALU Pharmacies. Provenzano graduated as valedictorian from University of Illinois College of Pharmacy in 1992. He began his career as a pharmacist at Osco Drug in Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he helped develop and grow their Diabetes Care Program which is now recognized by the American Diabetes Association. He has also developed and implemented numerous other clinical programs and services, including those that focus the provision of medication therapy management services and adult immunizations. Currently over 1500 pharmacists participate in his programs provide services to hundreds of thousands of patients each year. He also oversees three community pharmacy residency programs with five current residents.

Provenzano is a certified diabetes educator and a fellow of the GlaxoSmithKline/Wharton Business School Executive Management Program for Pharmacy Leaders. He has served on numerous pharmacy association advisory panels and currently serves on the Pharmacist Services Technical Advisory Coalition, the Pharmacy Quality Alliance, and the Coalition to Expand Pharmacist Medication Administration. He is also the 2003 recipient of the APhA/APPM Distinguished Service Award in Administrative Practice.

 Provenzano is a member of the UIC Pharmacy Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2002, he received the college's  Rising Star Award. His specialty is in community pharmacy-based clinical services.

 

riedlGeorge Riedl, BS '83
Senior Vice President-Marketing, Walgreen's

Riedl joined Walgreens in 1982 as a pharmacy intern. He was a store pharmacist and district pharmacy supervisor until 1991, when he was promoted to company headquarters. Then, he held various positions in Walgreen's Health Services, purchasing and e-commerce departments before being named a general merchandise manager in purchasing in February 2000.

 

 

 

Russell Secter, BS '78
President, OraPharma, Inc.

 Secter has 20 years of progressive sales and marketing/business experience in the pharmaceutical industry, with a track record of delivering results and successes in areas of medical marketing, strategic planning, business development and organizational re-engineering. He also has biopharmaceutical company start up and product launch experience. Secter has a broad base of commercial experience spanning traditional medical markets, generic pharmaceutical markets and dental pharmaceutical markets. Secter has 12 years experience in pharmaceutical marketing. The past two years were spent with Searle, in the positions of executive director of the Oncology Franchise, and senior director, Clinical Oncology Resource Group, Global Medical Marketing division. During his tenure with Searle, Secter developed global launch plans that included market preconditioning, forecasting, global pricing, thought leader development, medical education, and Phase IV studies. Prior to Searle, he held a number of positions with Novartis and Ciba Geigy, where he was responsible for a portfolio of products and multiple product launches. Secter earned a master's degree in business administration from Northwestern University-J.L. Kellogg School of Management, a PharmD from University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Pharmacy, and a bachelor's degree in pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Vice President, Medco Health

J. Russell Teagarden is vice president of clinical practices and therapeutics at Medco Health Solutions, Inc. He holds academic appointments at Rutgers College of Pharmacy, Ohio Northern University College of Pharmacy and the Albany College of Pharmacy. He served for 12 years as a drug information specialist and as a clinical pharmacist in the Chicago teaching hospital community. During this time, Mr. Teagarden was assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy. He was a visiting scholar in the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health from September 2001 to June 2002. Mr. Teagarden received a B.S. in pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmayc and an masters in research methodology from Loyola University in Chicago. He completed a residency in hospital pharmacy at Northwestern University Medical Center in Chicago.

 Tom Temple, BS '75
Executive Vice President and CEO, Iowa Pharmacy Association

Tom was been with IPA for more than 30 years. As EVP and CEO, he is responsible for staff development and management, strategic planning with IPA Board of Trustees, business development, government relations programming, liaison with national pharmacy organizations and CEO of the Iowa Pharmacy Foundation. Tom received UIC Alumnus of the Year in 1998 and currently serves as co-head of the Sesquicentennial Steering Committee.

 

 

 

 

weinertRonald Weinert, RPh, BS '83
Director or Government Relations, Walgreen's Company


Mr. Weinert joined Walgreens as a pharmacist in 1987, was promoted to pharmacy manager in 1988 and became pharmacy supervisor for the Des Moines district in 1994. He came to corporate headquarters in 1997 as manager of pharmacy operations for Loss Prevention, became manager of pharmacy services for e-commerce in 1999 and was promoted to director of e-commerce in 2000. He became director of patient services for Walgreens Health Services in 2003, vice president of patient services in 2005 and has held his current position from 2007.

 His prior experience includes supervising the out-patient pharmacy at Westlake Community Hospital, Melrose Park, Illinois, from 1983 to 1986; worked as an assistant manager and pharmacist for Doc's Drugs, Fox River Grove, Illinois, from 1986 to 1987.

Weinert received a BS in pharmacy from the University of Illinois College of Pharmacy in 1983. He received a certificate from the Wharton School and the Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics of the University of Pennsylvania in an Executive Management Program of Pharmacy Leaders. Weinert currently serves on the Illinois College of Pharmacy Deans Advisory Board of Directors and is the Chair of the Building and Grounds Committee. He is the past vice president and board member of the University of Illinois College of pharmacy Alumni Association Board of Directors. Weinert is a member of the Convenient Care Association Policy Council and the Florida Pharmacy Council. He was named in Crain's Chicago Business Magazine's The Internet 100 list in November of 2000. Born January 27, 1959, in Chicago, Weinert currently resides in Mundelein, Illinois.
